5 Tips to Keep Your Dogs Safe This Holiday Season
The holiday season is in full swing in Grand Rapids, and if you’re anything like us your pets play a huge part in the festivities. No matter what your plans are, it’s important to make sure your pets stay happy and safe during all of the commotion so that your holidays go off without a hitch. We’ve compiled some of our favorite tips below, so that you can be sure that everyone has a safe and happy holiday this year.
Give them a safe space
Even the most confident dog needs a quiet place to unwind when visitors are over. Give your dog a nice, quiet space to relax during all the activity – and if your pup likes to sneak out the door for a little frolic through the neighborhood, you might even consider giving them an entire room to hangout in around the time that people arrive or leave the house to make sure they don’t get loose.
Dispose of turkey bones ASAP
Cooked bones are more brittle than raw bones and can easily splinter, creating a choking hazard (and could even puncture intestines) should your pup get their paws on one. Keep holiday plants out of reach
Certain holiday plants like mistletoe, holly, and lilies can be dangerous to your dog’s health. Keep them out of reach by displaying them on a tabletop or elevated surface that your dog cannot jump on. If you have a dog (or cat) that likes to jump, it may be worth taking the extra precaution and purchasing artificial plants instead of live ones to decorate your home with during the holidays.
Secure your Tree and Lights
If your pups are anything like ours, play time doesn’t stop just because there is a tree taking up half the living room. Avoid any tree disasters by making sure it’s secure enough to withstand running dogs and place ornaments far enough back on the branches that wagging tails won’t cause any mishaps. Ensure lights stay in one piece (and out of your dog’s stomach) by keeping them out of reach from your pets at all times.
Watch the exits
Even a well behaved dog can slip quietly out the door while guests are coming in and out of the house. Keep a close eye on the door any time someone is coming or going to make sure your dog stays inside. If your dog likes to indulge in a good romp through Grand Rapids unsupervised, add an extra layer of security by crating them, or putting them in their safe space (see #1) while guests arrive.
